Understanding mice

A mouse is a tool you use for hours at a time, so shape and weight usually matter more than a sensor specification you cannot perceive. Match the shape to your grip and the weight to how much you move the cursor.

How to choose

  • Shape and grip: ergonomic, ambidextrous, or vertical. Grip style changes which shape works.
  • Weight: lighter is easier to move; heavier can feel steadier.
  • Sensor resolution: measurable, but above a certain point it stops affecting daily use.
  • Connectivity: low-latency wireless, Bluetooth, or wired. Multi-device pairing is a practical factor.
  • Software and buttons: how many buttons can be remapped, and whether the tool works without an account.
